Public speaking

1. Catching the attention of the audience. Catch your audience’s attention. Open with a catchy quote, surprising fact or anecdote that the audience can relate to.

2. Introduction. Introduce yourself and briefly state what you have to offer to the audience.

3. Go through the lecture. Progress through the lecture smoothly, beginning with the introduction and flowing through the notes to the conclusion. Connect all ideas and examples.

4. Eye contact. Maintain eye-contact with the audience members. Scan the audience slowly, so that each audience member feels as if you are addressing him/her individually.

5. Articulation. Speak clearly. Enunciate your words. Use good grammar. Project to reach the back of the venue, or use a microphone.

6. Questions. Ask the audience for any questions or comments following the lecture.

7. Final remarks. Thank the audience for coming to hear you speak.
